Data

The Transition Minerals Tracker contains data relating to companies mining six minerals that are key to the production of solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and electric vehicle batteries.

These minerals were selected due to their expected increase in demand due to the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors. Companies were selected if they were one of the top five global producers of cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel or zinc, and/or they were one of the top five producers in Southern Africa.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre collected company policies and human rights allegations in the first half of 2019. Allegations or policies published after May 2019 are not included in this launch phase of the Tracker.

Allegations were principally researched through the Resource Centre’s own media coverage and Company Response Mechanism between 2010 and May 2019. Research on external databases was also conducted when little coverage was available on the Resource Centre’s website. The maximum number of allegations recorded for a single mining operation was set at 8. Where further allegations were observed, this is marked by a + sign in the downloadable data. Please note that the number of allegations is not a perfect reflection of the severity of a mining operation’s human rights record, but only an indicator that must be balanced with data gaps, uneven media coverage and civil society capacity or restrictions across different countries.
